Cougars Sweep Barons; Earn First Two Wins of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH, Pa. - MARCH 29th, 2016 -- The Chatham University Softball team hosted the Barons from Franciscan University this afternoon in a double-header on Varsity Field. Each team would be looking for their first win of the season, and Chatham would come out on top with winning each game this afternoon. The Cougars would defeat the Barons 7-2 in the first game, and then 10-3 in the second game.

The Chatham University Softball team picked up their first win in the 3:00 p.m., game this afternoon when they defeated the Barons by a score of 7-2. The Barons jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when they would score two runs. Chatham would score a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning, making the score 2-1. Both teams would not be able to produce a run the next three innings, until Chatham came to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chatham would score three runs in the fifth, and then three more runs in the sixth, making the score 7-2 entering the seventh and final inning. The Cougars would hold on to their lead, and earn their frist victory. Sophomore Pitcher Samantha Crilley (Zelienople, Pa. / Seneca Valley) would pitch a complete game, striking out 8 Baron batters. Crilley also got it done at the plate, having 2 hits and driving in 2 runs. First Year Catcher Kailin Sonson (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) would also have 2 hits in the game and drive in 2 runs of her own. Senior Right Fielder Dalal Ghanem (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills) would also have 2 hits in the game. First Year Center Fielder Adrianna Martin (Apollo, Pa. / Apollo Ridge) would score 2 runs, and have 2 stolen bases in the game.

The second game of the double header began just 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Senior Leigha Pehrson (Mt. Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) would lead the way for Chatham in the second game, by pitching a complete game of her own, striking out 6 Baron batters that came to the plate. Pehrson would give herself some help in the game by having two hits and driving in two runs. As a team, Chatham would have five doubles and one triple in the game. First Year Samantha Crilley would have three hits, First Year Kaitlin Sonson would have two hits and drive in two runs, and Senior Katrina Hawkins (Powell River, BC / Brooks Secondary School) would also have two hits in the game and also drive in two runs.

The Chatham University Softball team will look to carry their 2 game win streak into the weekend as they begin conference play. The Cougars will travel to Waynesburg University to take on the Yellow Jackets beginning at 1:00 p.m.
