Comeback Falls Short Against Bethany as Chatham Drops 68-58 Decision

BETHANY, WV – Down by 18 points with just over seven minutes remaining, the Chatham University Basketball team mounted a furious comeback to pull within seven, but eventually fell to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Bethany College 68-58 on Wednesday.

Bethany (7-15, 5-10 PAC) led 62-44 with 7:13 on the clock when the Cougars fought back. Chatham (3-19, 2-13 PAC) connected on six of their next nine free throws, while holding the Bison to just 1-9 shooting, to come within seven at 65-58 with 45 seconds to play. Bethany stopped the comeback, though, by making three free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory.

Bethany started the game strong, going on a 16-4 run to take a 27-11 lead with 10:21 on the first half clock. Chatham went on a comeback then as well, scoring 11 of the game's next 13 points to bring the score to 29-22. Chatham kept the game close and went into halftime trailing 40-27.

First-Year guard Rachel McClain (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) led Chatham with 17 points. She made the only three pointer for the Cougars, who shot 1-11 (9.1%) from beyond the arc. Emily Schmidt (So., Eighty Four, PA/Ringgold) scored 13 points and tallied team-highs with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Marguerite Sargent (Sr., Washington, PA/Washington) dished out four assists while Julianne Speeney (Sr., Connellsville, PA/Geibel Catholic) had four steals.

Taylor Verrico led Bethany with 21 points. Carly Garneau added 18.

Chatham out-shot the Bison from both the floor and the free throw line. The Cougars shot 22-57 (38.6%) from the floor, while Bethany shot 28-74 (37.8%). Chatham made 13 free throws to just seven for Bethany. Bethany held a 54-36 advantage in rebounds, including grabbing 20 on the offensive side of the court. Both teams scored 20 points off turnovers.

Chatham returns to action on Saturday, February 9 when they host PAC foe Washington & Jefferson College. Tip-off in the AFC is set for 2:00pm.
