Rachel McClain (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) set a Chatham University record with eight made three pointers, and scored a career-high 34 points en route to a 74-41 victory over Penn State-Altoona on Thursday. Chatham improves to 2-10 on the season. The Lions fall to 0-11.
McClain shot 11-25 from the field and 4-6 from the free throw line to go along with her eight treys.
Becky Rowe (So., Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) made four threes, scoring 16 points in the win.
Chelsea Kovalcsik (Fy., Berea, OH/Berea) tallied career-highs with five points and 15 rebounds.
Elizabeth Lewis (Jr., Marysville, OH/Marysville) dished out seven assists for the Cougars.
For the Lions, Kylie O'Toole recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Moira Corrigan grabbed 11 rebounds.
After Penn State-Altoona jumped out to an early 8-6 lead, Chatham went on a 9-2 run which included threes from Rowe and McClain, as well as a traditional three point play from Kovalcsik. The Lions responded, though, with a 7-3 run over the next 7:17 to close the deficit to just one with 4:28 to play in the first half. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the half, and the Cougars went into intermission with a 27-25 advantage.
A huge run early in the second half broke the game wide open for Chatham, which out-scored Altoona 47-16 in the second half. The Cougars went on a 24-3 run to take a 57-33 lead with just over ten minutes left in the game. During that span, Chatham forced seven turnovers and held the Lions to 1-8 shooting. Over the final 4:42 of the contest, Chatham outscored the Lions 9-0.
The Cougars held slight advantages in points in the paint (24-22) and fast break points (10-4). The Chatham bench came up big offensively, scoring 31 points.
Chatham will return to action on Saturday, January 5, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson College for a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup beginning at 2:00pm.
