Elizabeth Lewis (Jr., Marysville, OH/Marysville) and
Anna Shashura (Fy., Fredericktown, PA/Bethlehem Center) each scored 11 points, but the Chatham University basketball team fell to Carnegie Mellon University 88-47 on Sunday. The Cougars fall to 1-9 following the loss, while CMU improves to 8-2.
Emily Schmidt (So., Eighty Four, PA/Ringgold) and
Chelsea Kovalcsik (Fy., Berea, OH/Berea) each grabbed a team-high six rebounds for Chatham. Schmidt also blocked two shots and Lewis dished out a team-high five assists.
For the Tartans, Liza Otto recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Emily Peel led all scorers, netting 24 points on 10-16 shooting.
After CMU took a quick 8-3 lead, a three pointer by Lewis tied the game at 10 with 13:44 to play in the first half. Midway through the half, an 8-2 run, capped by a Shashura trey, knotted the score at 24. With just under three minutes on the first half clock, Schmidt drained a jumper to bring Chatham within two at 31-29, but CMU finished the half on a 10-2 run to go into halftime leading 41-32.
Carnegie Mellon opened the second half on a 14-0 run, opening up a 55-32 advantage. Chatham got within 20 on two occasions midway through the half, but could not get any closer. CMU out-scored Chatham in the second half 47-15.
Chatham drained six three-pointers in the game, including five in the first half. CMU connected on just two. CMU held large advantages in rebounding, pulling down 54 to Chatham's 30, and in points in the paint (54-10). The Cougars shot 15-18 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
Chatham will open the second half of the season on Wednesday, January 2, when they host Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College. Tip-off in the Chatham AFC is set for 7:00pm.
