CRESSON, PA – A first half slump led to a 74-52 defeat for the Chatham University Basketball team at the hands of Mount Aloysius College on Saturday. The Cougars fall to 1-8 on the season, while Mount Aloysius improves to 5-5 with the win.
Emily Schmidt (So., Eighty Four, PA/Ringgold) had a career day with 21 points on 10-11 shooting. She also pulled down six rebounds.
Carly Zelenak (Jr., Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds, while
Elizabeth Lewis (Jr., Marysville, OH/Marysville) added ten points.
Becky Rowe (So., Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) dished out a team-high four assists in the loss.
Four Lady Mounties scored in double figures. Becky Bard led the way with 17, while Olivia Rupp added 15. Lindsey Sammarco tallied 14 points and Teddi Burkett scored 10.
After jumping out to an early 4-3 advantage, Mount Aloysius went on a 16-0 run over a 7:32 span to open a 20-3 lead. Chatham responded with a 10-3 spurt of their own to close the gap to ten at 23-13. The Mounties, however, ended the half on a 12-4 run to go into halftime leading 35-17.
Chatham came out of the second half gate strong, scoring the first nine points to cut the deficit to nine, 35-26. The Cougars kept the score close until a 9-0 Mount Aloysius run to give the Mounties a 60-42 advantage with nine minutes to play. Mount Aloysius expanded their lead to 25 later in the half, sealing the home victory.
Chatham held a 7-0 advantage in second-chance points. Both squads connected on five three pointers. The Cougars out-rebounded Mount Aloysius 40-36, but were outscored in the paint 20-16.
Chatham is off until a Sunday, December 30 matchup at crosstown rival Carnegie Mellon University. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
