First Half Slump Dooms Chatham; Cougars Fall to Saint Vincent

PITTSBURGH, PA – A 27-1 run in the first half propelled the visiting Saint Vincent College Bearcats to a 71-46 victory over Chatham University in women's basketball action on Wednesday. The game was the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both squads. SVC improves to 3-2 (1-0 PAC) with the win, while the Cougars fall to 0-5 (0-1 PAC).

Chatham raced out to a 7-4 lead six minutes into the contest, but then Saint Vincent went on their scoring spurt. Over the next 10:37, the Bearcats forced 13 Chatham turnovers and shot 9-17 from the floor, moving their deficit to a 31-8 lead. SVC would increase that advantage and go into halftime with a 38-12 lead.

Chatham began the second half on a 12-7 run to cut the Saint Vincent lead to 21, but could get no closer. Saint Vincent responded with an 11-2 run of their own to go back up by 30, equaling their largest lead of the contest. Consecutive layups by Chelsea Kovalcsik (Fy, Berea, OH/Berea), Emily Schmidt (So., Eighty Four, PA/Ringgold), and Rachel McClain (Fy, Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) brought Chatham within 23 with seven minutes remaining, and the two teams played even basketball for the remainder of the game, giving SVC the 71-46 victory.

Three players scored in double figures for the Bearcats. Melissa Mansur led the way with 16 on 8-15 shooting. She also recorded a game-high eight steals. Jordan Clinton notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Taylor Mathers added 11 points.

For Chatham, Carly Zelenak (Jr., Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Marguerite Sargent (Sr., Washington, PA/Washington) added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds and six steals. Becky Rowe (So., Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) also tallied eight points.

Both teams committed a high number of turnovers, with Saint Vincent coughing it up 27 times, just short of Chatham's 35 miscues. The Cougars out-shot SVC from the free throw line, connecting on 53.8%, to the Bearcats 51.4%. SVC held an advantage in points off turnovers (36-22) and points in the paint (38-20).

Chatham will return to PAC action on Saturday, December 1, when they host Geneva College at 1:00pm.
