PITTSBURGH, PA – Fueled by 28 points from Casie Cygan and double-doubles from Jessica Pitts and LaShauna Brothers, the La Roche College women's basketball team earned an 88-55 victory over Chatham University on Monday. Cygan drained four three-pointers for the Red Hawks (3-1), while Pitts scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Brothers netted 13 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds.
First-year guard
Rachel McClain (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) paced Chatham (0-4) with 17 points on 6-11 shooting. McClain,
Elizabeth Lewis (So., Marysville, OH/Marysville), and
Taylor Ohm (So., Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) all dished out three assists for the Cougars.
Marguerite Sargent (Sr., Washington, PA/Washington) scored 12 points, and
Becky Rowe (So., Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) tallied 10 for the Cougars. Sargent and
Emily Schmidt (So., Eighty Four, PA/Ringgold) each grabbed seven rebounds.
The Cougars jumped out to an 11-5 lead 6:20 into the game following a Rowe layup. La Roche responded, however, with a 13-0 run over the next 3:57 to pull ahead 18-11. The Red Hawks would lead the rest of the contest. Chatham brought the score within one at the 8:13 mark with a McClain layup, but La Roche quickly increased their lead, and went into halftime with a 41-32 advantage.
The Cougars began the second half on a 5-3 spurt to cut the deficit to seven, but a 14-0 run by La Roche quickly gave the Red Hawks a 58-37 lead with 14 minutes on the clock. Chatham cut the lead to 16 shortly thereafter, but could not get any closer.
Chatham shot 21-46 (45.7%) from the floor for the game, while La Roche connected on 35 of 78 (44.9%) field goal attempts. The Red Hawks held sizeable advantages in points in the paint (50-16), points off turnovers (34-14), and fast break points (22-6).
Chatham begins Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday, November 28, when they host Saint Vincent College (2-2) at 7:00pm in the AFC.
