SWARTHMORE, PA – Three Washington & Lee players scored in double figures as the Generals defeated Chatham University 61-39 in the consolation game of the 2012 Swarthmore Tip-Off Classic. W&L moves to 1-1 on the short season. Chatham falls to 0-2.
Alena Hamrick led W&L with 13 points, while Katy Wilson added 11 and Shelbi Hendricks netted 10.
Rachel McClain (Fy., Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) led the Cougars with 15 points on 6-11 shooting. McClain scored 14 points yesterday against Swarthmore, leading her to be named to the All-Tournament Team. She also added three steals today.
Carly Zelenak (Jr., Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) and
Marguerite Sargent (Sr., Washington, PA/Washington) each recorded seven points. Zelenak led Chatham with 10 rebounds.
The Cougars took and early 4-2 lead, but Washington & Lee went on a 9-2 run to take a 17-8 lead with eight minutes to play in the first half. A McClain layup at the 6:55 mark brought Chatham within six, but W&L maintained the lead and went into halftime with a 26-16 cushion.
A Zelenak layup cut the deficit to eight early in the second half, but the Generals once again answered, going on a 20-8 run to break the game open. Chatham reeled off an 8-0 spurt late in the game, but could get no closer than 17 points.
W&L shot 36.4% from the floor, while Chatham shot 30.6%. The Generals drained six three-pointers. Chatham shot 0-9 from behind the arc. W&L held a narrow 42-41 edge in rebounds and assisted on 13 of 24 field goals.
Chatham returns to action on Tuesday, November 20, when they host the University of Pitt-Greensburg at 7:00pm for the 2012-2013 home opener.
