Ice Hockey Earns First NCAA Victory, 5-2 over Buffalo State

BUFFALO, NY – Five different players scored a goal, Chatham went 3-6 on their power play, and goaltender Megan Buchanan (So., Ottawa, ONT/Rideau St. Lawrence) saved 29 of 31 shots, as the Chatham University Ice Hockey team earned their first NCAA victory since the 2009-2010 season with a 5-2 victory over Buffalo State College on Saturday.

Chatham improves to 2-6-0 on the season, while the Bengals fall to 3-4-0. The game did not count as an ECAC-West contest, despite both teams being a member of the conference.

Casey Morfeld (Jr., Union City, CA/San Jose Jr. Sharks) got the Cougars on the board first with a goal just 1:21 into the game. Marie Soukup (Fy., Lake Bluff, IL/Team Illinois U19) scored a power play goal with 5:49 remaining on the first period clock to give Chatham a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Gina Abrego (So., Edina, MN/The Blake School) put the Cougars up 3-1 with a power play goal at the 15:57 mark of the second period. After Buffalo State scored to make it 3-2 heading into the third period, Erika Bronk (Fy., Fairport, NY/Rochester Edge) and Katrina Hawkins (Fy., Powell River, BC/North Island Extreme) scored in the third period to seal the road victory.

Soukup and Morgan Becer (Jr., Ligonier, PA/Team Pittsburgh) each had two assists for the Cougars. Abrego, Morfeld, and Jenna Cosham (Jr., Carleton Place, ONT/Rideau St. Lawrence) all recorded one assist. Chatham held the Bengals to 0-4 on the power play, including killing a five-on-three opportunity.

Chatham returns to the ice tomorrow, Sunday, November 18, when they host Adrian College. Game time is set for 2:00pm at the McKnight Hockey Center on the campus of Shady Side Academy.
