Softball Sweeps Penn State Beaver in Record Way

MONACA, PA - It was a big day for Chatham Softball (9-17, 3-5 PAC) team as they went above and beyond against Penn State Beaver (5-14, 0-2) to earn a sweep and tie some records. 

The Cougars would come out ready to battle from the very first inning, eventually winning 10-2. Sophomore Riely Jones would kick things off when she would reach on a fielder's choice and freshman Gaby McTavish would score from an error by the catcher. Freshman Madi Gorney would then step up to the plate to round out the first inning scoring with her second homerun of the season. Jones would return in the second to hit a single and bring home freshman Allison Livelsberger. Seniors Victoria Murren and Kayleen Garcia would then add home runs of their own in the third and fifth. Jones would hit another double late in the game to bring home McTavish and Livelsberger. Gorney would then bring Jones in on another double, and Murren would add a double of her own to bring in Gorney. 

On the mound for the Cougars would be Murren who would pitch the entire six inning game. Murren would only allow six hits and two runs while on the mound, but struck out a season high nine batters. 

With the three home runs (Gorney, Murren, and Garcia) scored in this game, the Cougars tied their Team Single Game record!

The second game wouldn't be much different as the Cougars would defeat the Nittany Lions 9-2 this time around. The Cougars would take a seat in the first two innings, but would kick things off in the third inning when McTavish would earn the first run off a bases loaded walk. Sophomore Josie Underdonk would then single to left field allowing Gorney to add to the total. Garcia would then earn the next run off another bases loaded walk. Gorney wouldn't be satisfied with just one homerun today, so she did it again allowing her and McTavish to earn another run each. The dynamic pitching duo would then come through as sophomore Hannah Uhrinek singled to left field allowing Murren to score. McTavish would then add another double bringing home senior Chelsea Stabile and Underdonk.  McTavish would then finish off the scoring in the top of the seventh. 

On the mound this time around for the Cougars was Underdonk and Uhrinek. Underdonk would pitch for 2.1 innings allowing two hits and two runs but striking out three batters. Uhrinek would step in for the last 4.2 innings in which she would only allow three hits and earn a career high 11 strikeouts.

With her two doubles, McTavish would add to the record breaking as she tied the Individual Batting record for a Single Game!

The Cougars return to PAC play tomorrow, April 9th, when they return home to West Field to take on the Hiram Terriers at 6:30PM and 8:30PM.
