Cougars Split with Yellow Jackets on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - March 6, 2021 - Chatham Softball had their second double header of the 2021 season this afternoon at Waynesburg University. The Cougars earned a 10-3 win in the first game followed by a 3-2 loss in the second.

Chatham commanded the game's offense from the first inning, starting with a double from Lauren Haak. She was brought home off of a single from classmate Justine Boyle, putting the Cougars up 1-0 going into the second.

Waynesburg scored their equalizing run in the bottom of the second, leading the Cougars to strike back. First-year Mackenzie Dunn was the first to get on base, moved along by a single from Haak. With Dunn on third, Boyle singled, getting Chatham a second run.

Senior Kelsey Benjamin took advantage of the loaded bases soon after pinch hitter Carly Clark was walked, hitting a gap shot into left field and bringing Lauren Haak home. They continued their scoring streak in the fifth inning, beginning with a triple from sophomore Alyssa Hoffman. With aid from some walks and errors from the Yellow Jackets, the Cougars were able to work their way home for two more runs.

The scoring spree really took off in the sixth inning, where the Cougars scored their remaining four runs. Hits came from senior Caitlin Worwood, graduate student Paige Shaftic, and Mackenzie Dunn, who brought in a game-high three RBIs.

The second game was a battle down to the last inning. Waynesburg led 1-0 from the second inning until the sixth, where they scored another run. Down 2-0, the Cougars cashed in on their offense in the top of the seventh inning.

The rally began with a single from first-year Lindsay Hans, followed by another from Worwood. Lauren Haak had the third single of the inning, this one scoring Hans and moving Worwood to second. After a walk resulting in bases loaded, Kelsey Benjamin hit a double, scoring Worwood to tie the game.

Unfortunately, Chatham's scoring halted in the top of the seventh, and Waynesburg was able to get one more run for the walk-off.

Lauren Haak was once again the hits leader of the day with six, including one double. In the circle, senior Julie Swedberg earned her first win of the season.

The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, March 9th at 2 and 4 PM as they host Saint Vincent in a non-conference matchup.
