Chatham Offense Struggles in Loss to W&J

Box Score WASHINGTON, PA – Chatham shot 8-49 (16.3%) from the field en route to a 61-27 loss at Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday. Emily Schmidt (So., Eighty Four, PA/Ringgold) led the Cougars (2-11, 1-5 PAC) with 10 points and four blocked shots.

Carly Zelenak (Jr., Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) grabbed a team-high ten rebounds, all on the defensive end, and also led Chatham with two assists. Rachel McClain (Fy., Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg), who came into the contest ranked sixth in the PAC scoring 15.1 points per game, scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds.

For W&J (9-4, 4-2 PAC), Chelsea Apke recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Chatham kept the game close early, tying the contest at six following a Schmidt jumper with 15:33 to play in the first half. Their offensive struggles began, though, and the Cougars managed just one more field goal the remainder of the half. McClain drained a three pointer with 7:17 on the clock to cut the deficit to 26-11. Only four points were scored in the final six minutes of the half, and the Presidents went into halftime with a 32-13 lead.

Schmidt and McClain each scored a quick basket to open the second half for Chatham, but the Cougars went the next 10:35 without a field goal as W&J opened a 49-21 advantage with just under nine minutes to play in the game.

Chatham shot 1-15 (6.7%) from three point territory. They came into the contest averaging 5.3 threes made per game. Chatham will return to action on Wednesday, January 9 when they host PAC foe Bethany College at 7:00pm.
