PITTSBURGH, PA – Playing most of the game in rainy weather, the Penn College Wildcats defeated Chatham University in soccer action on Tuesday, 5-0. Penn improves to 6-1-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 3-5.
“I was really proud of how the team played today,” said Head Coach
Betsy Warren. “We had to adjust to their game a little bit in the first half, but we stayed with them. In the second half, we were really pushing for a goal, and we did everything we could to finish the game. It was just unfortunate that we had a couple injuries so we had to play a man down. Despite those things, I thought we competed well.”
Penn's Jamie Steer scored in the seventh and 18th minutes to give the Wildcats a quick 2-0 lead; one they would take into intermission. Valeria Passalacqua scored back-to-back goals, in the 70th and 72nd minutes, to extend Penn's lead to four. In the 81st minute, Laresa Paden capped the scoring with her first goal of the season.
For Chatham,
Claire Geraghty (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic),
Lindsay Matusak (Jr., Latrobe, PA/Derry Area), and
Alison Taverna (Medway, MD/Medway) each recorded two shots on goal.
Sarah Ellis (So., Lawrence, PA/Canon-McMillan) and
Sarah Jugovic (Fy., Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) added one shot on goal apiece.
In net,
Liz Sawyer (So., Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) recorded 12 saves. Penn's Reda Vermilya had eight saves in the shutout.
Chatham will open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday, September 29, when they host Waynesburg University at 1:00pm.
