Women's Lacrosse Earns Home Playoff Game with Win Over Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. - On Wednesday, the Cougars (11-3, 7-1 PAC) played their final regular season road game. This time they were taking on the Saint Vincent Bearcats (8-6, 4-5), looking to extend their current winning streak to five which would be the longest in program history. The outcome of the game was not in dispute for long as the Cougars jumped out to an early lead, cruising to a record setting fifth consecutive win, 18-4. With the win, the Cougars have clinched a top four seed in the upcoming PAC playoffs and will receive a home game to open the playoffs.

The Cougars opened up with a pair of early goals including a free position goal to open the game. The Bearcats answered back with one goal. That would be the closest the game ever was as the Cougars scored the next three goals, all coming from the stick of Bella Walski-Rodriguez, who continued her dominant freshman season. The Cougars would concede one more goal before Walski-Rodriguez scored her fifth goal of the game to give the Cougars a 6-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Cougars dominated in the second quarter scoring seven goals while keeping Saint Vincent off the board. The quarter was highlighted by Campbell Murphy's three consecutive goals, and four total in the quarter. The Cougars opened up a 13-2 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Cougars offense pulled back. Walski-Rodriguez scored her seventh goal of the game to open the third quarter. That would cap a 9-0 scoring run for the Cougars. The Bearcat offense started to put something together for the first time all game, scoring back to back goals before Walski-Rodriguez closed the quarter with her eighth goal of the game. That gave the Cougars a 15-4 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the Cougars defense once again stifled the Bearcats and kept them off the scoreboard. The Cougars added three goals in the final 15 minutes to close out the game with an 18-4 win, securing the the second straight season with a home playoff game.

The Cougars were led offensively by Walski-Rodriguez's ten point (8G 2A) performance. Murphy recorded five points (4G 1A) and was the only other Cougar with more than two points. Marcella Valentine, in addition to scoring the first goal of the game, recorded a team high five ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls. Murphy and Rachel Luomala also recorded five draw controls each. Meghan Cuza-Berry picked up the win for the Cougars making four saves and recording a .500 save rate. The Cougars converted on 13-of-18 clear attempts and caused seven failed clears by the Bearcats.

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday April 25th when they host Westminster for the regular season finale and Senior Day at 1 PM.
