PITTSBURGH, Pa. - On Saturday, the Cougars (12-3, 8-1 PAC) took on the Westminster Titans (9-7, 6-3) for the regular season finale. Before the game the two seniors were honored and then the attention turned to the game, which held large playoff implications for both teams. The Cougars and Titans had both already locked up a home playoff game but the seeding was still up in the air. Depending on the outcome, the Cougars could be anywhere between the #2 seed and #4. The Cougars did not waste any time in settling the question as they pounced early and often en route to a 15-6 win and a first round bye as the #2 seed in the PAC tournament. With today's win, the Cougars have broken the single season program wins record, held by last year's PAC Runner Up team.
The Titans won the opening draw and put multiple quality shots on goal but
Meghan Cuza-Berry locked down the net for the Cougars turning them away and the Cougars finally got the ball a couple minutes into the game.
Bella Walski-Rodriguez scored the first goal of the game, assisted by
Sara Kaesshaefer. The Cougars continued building on the early momentum and scored seven unanswered goals in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead at the break. The goals were highlighted by a pair of
Natalie Ondo goals just 13 seconds apart for the fourth and fifth goals of the quarter. In the second quarter, the Titans offense showed up and they got their first goal of the game. The Cougars were able to answer with a pair of their own to extend the lead to a then game high eight goals. Ondo recorded her hat trick goal in the run. The Titans answered back with a pair of their own however. It appeared that the teams would go to the half with the Cougars leading 9-3, but with 22 seconds remaining in the half Ondo scored her fourth goal of the game. That was not the only late-half-heroics the Cougars had in store as
Madison Kata scored her first goal of the game just 12 seconds later and 10 before halftime. That gave the Cougars an 11-3 lead as the teams broke for halftime.
In the third quarter, The Titans once again opened up with a single goal. Walski-Rodriguez answered back by completing her hat trick with a free position goal. The Titans, trying to stay within potential rally distance, scored again, halfway through the third quarter. Ondo took things into her own hands scoring the final two goals of the third quarter, her 39th and 40th of the season.
Rachel Luomala picked up an assist on the first of the pair. That gave the Cougars a 14-5 lead as the teams reset for the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, defense and physicality was on display. The quarter was headlined by the four cards, two on each team and the nine total turnovers. Luomala scored the only goal for the Cougars just over two minutes into the quarter. The Titans answered back with a goal of their own, but that was all they could muster as the Cougars locked up a first round bye with a dominant 15-6 win on senior day.
The Cougars were led offensively by Ondo's seven points (6G 1A). Luomala (2G 2A) and Walski-Rodriguez (3G) were the only other Cougars with more than two points.
Sofia Hoetzlein-Sirman paced the Cougars with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Campbell Murphy had a team high five draw controls. Cuza-Berry made six saves and had a .500 save rate as she picked up her 12th win of the season.
