PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Chatham Baseball (22-10, 8-8 PAC) evened their conference record on Monday afternoon by defeating Geneva (13-15, 5-11) in both games of their doubleheader by scores of 11-1 and 9-2.
The Golden Tornadoes struck first in the top of the first inning in game one, but their lead would be short-lived.
Caleb Jones' RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied the score, then
Matt Brandt's 2-RBI base knock gave the Cougars the lead. The next 3 Chatham runs would be scored on RBI hit-by-pitches, as
Dominic Colarusso, Brandt and
Devin Fluhmann were all beaned with the bases loaded, giving the Cougars a 6-1 advantage after two innings. Chatham added another run in the third when
Angelo DeLeonardis scored by tagging up on
Cooper Baxter's popup to second base. In the sixth,
Zane Pollack brought around
Eddie Rueda with a double, then Brandt picked up his fourth and fifth RBIs of the game with a ground rule double.
Nolan Boehm ended the game with a sac fly, triggering the 10-run rule by bringing in DeLeonardis in the seventh.
Brandt went 2-3 with 5 RBIs and a HBP from the seventh spot in the order for the Cougars. Baxter was 2-2 with 3 runs, a walk and an RBI. Jones was 2-4 with an RBI scored. DeLeonardis reached twice via walks and scored 3 runs and stole a base. On the mound,
Cason Bennett tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing no earned runs on 6 hits and striking out 5 for Chatham.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the second inning of game two, DeLeonardis sent a fly ball down the right field line that dropped between two fielders, scoring three Cougars. The senior then stole third and gave Chatham a 4-0 lead when the throw from the catcher whizzed by the third baseman into left field. Geneva pulled a run back in the sixth, but
Zane Pollack's sac fly brought Jones home and Brandt scored on a balk in the bottom of the inning. The Cougars went up 7-1 in the seventh when Rueda scored on a wild pitch, and in the eight
Keegan McGraw scored when DeLeonardis was hit by a pitch and Fluhmann crossed the plate on a double play ball.
DeLeonardis was 1-3 at the plate in game two, scoring a run and getting hit by two pitches with a stolen base and 4 RBIs. Brandt went 2-4 and scored two Chatham runs. Fluhmann scored twice and was 1-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. Pollack went 1-2 with a run and an RBI, and Rueda stole 2 bases.
Matt Bamford got the start on the bump for the Cougars and struck out 12 hitters, allowing just an earned run on 4 hits and a walk.
Riley Baum tossed a scoreless ninth inning with 2 punchouts.
Chatham takes on Waynesburg at West Field on Wednesday, with the doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
