Cougars Use 10 Goal Run to Tame Tigers

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - On Tuesday, the Cougars (3-1) played their first home game of the season, defeating the visiting Wittenberg Tigers by a final score of 17-8. The Cougars led by as many as 12 goals in the fourth quarter following a 10-0 run that stretched from the second quarter into the fourth.


The Cougars got the game started offensively when Thomas Whitaker scored his 16th goal of the season 2 ½ minutes into the game. The Tigers fired right back with a pair of goals to put them ahead 2-1. That would be the last time the Tigers led as Sean Creeden and Owen Millar each scored a goal to give the Cougars another one goal lead. The Tigers tied it back up with under four minutes to play in the first quarter. That would be the last time the game was tied as the Cougars added the next three marks to the scoreboard. Adam Rinker, Luke Iovino and Gavin Loshnowsky all scored for the Cougars as they opened a three goal lead midway through the second quarter. The Tigers got one back shortly after but that sparked a 10-0 run by the Cougars that lasted into the fourth quarter. Jacob Lubawy, Adam Rinker, Thomas Whitaker, Erik Sahlgren, Sean Creeden, Cody Randal, J.R. DuBose and Michael Flynn all had goals in that stretch with Rinker and Whitaker scoring two each. The Tigers scored a pair of goals on each side of Brady Rigdon's final cougar goal as Chatham took care of business winning 18-7.


 The Cougars were led by Jacob Lubawy's five points (1G 4A) while Erik Sahlgren (1G 3A) and Adam Rinker (3G 1A) had mirrored four point lines. Whitaker scored his third consecutive hat trick pushing his season total to 18. Cody Randal led the Cougars with eight ground balls, winning 12 face offs while Gavin Loshnowsky caused a team high four turnovers. The Cougars converted on 19 of 28 clear attempts. James Cipollone made 11 saves and had a .733 save rate of 15 shots on goal as all four of the Cougars goalies spent time in net.


The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday March 7th when they travel to Glenside, Pa. to take on Arcadia at 1 PM.
