Pittsburgh, PA – Chatham Women's Hockey (3-18-2, 2-11-0) faced off against Utica (9-15-1, 6-8-0) in their final home season series. The Cougars fell just short, losing to the Pioneers by a score of 2-0.
The first period was marked by back-and-forth play with both teams struggling to find the upper hand. First-year goaltender Morgan Miller kept her momentum going after a strong showing in last weekend's appearance. She was perfect in the first frame, stopping all 13 shots on goal she faced, keeping the high-flying Pioneers offense at bay. Miller was aided by stout defensive play from Avelyn Higgins and Abby Cunkelman, who each recorded 2 blocks in the first 20 minutes.
Just over two minutes in the second period, the Pioneers would tip one home, going out to a slim 1-0 lead. They would double the lead at the 7:48 mark of the period to make it 2-0. The Cougars still couldn't solve the Utica goaltender, heading into the final frame trailing by two.
The third period saw the teams go scoreless as the Pioneers held onto their lead. The Cougars finished the period with five shots on goal but were unable to get their offense going. Chatham would pull their goaltender with just over two minutes left in a game for a last gasp attempt, but a Cougars' penalty ended the final push.
Morgan Miller continued her strong season. She finished the game, making 44 saves and ending with a .957 save percentage. Abby Cunkelman ended with a game-high 6 blocks, with 3 more Cougars registering multi-block games.
Women's Hockey finishes their season tomorrow, February 21st, for game two of their series against Utica. Puck drop is slated for 1 pm at the Alpha Ice Complex.
