NEW WILMINGTON, Pa - On Saturday, the Cougars (7-5, 2-1 PAC) returned to action as they took on the Westminster Titans (6-5, 1-2 PAC). The Cougars fell behind early in the first quarter but were able to draw back into the game and take the lead before halftime but trailed by one at half. The two teams traded blows in the second half and traded leads and ties with the Cougars ultimately holding on and winning 13-12.
The home Titans were the first to find the back of the net when they scored just one minute into the game to take the lead. Though the Cougars would answer back with an unassisted
Ethan Rinker goal less than a minute later, the first quarter belonged to the Titans who scored a pair of goals to close out the quarter leading 3-1 after the first 15 minutes. The Cougars came out hot in the second quarter scoring three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead five minutes into the quarter. The Cougars scored on unassisted goals from
Bryce Kerrigan and
Liam Rooney. The final goal of the run was scored on the brother-to-brother connection as
Adam Rinker found Ethan, who put the shot away giving the Cougars their first lead of the game. The rest of the second quarter was a defensive flight with the Titans being the only team to score, they netted a pair the first with six minutes left and then took the lead with 15 seconds left in the first half. That gave the Titans a lead heading into the second half 5-4.
The Cougars came out of halftime reinvigorated, scoring two goals in the first two minutes into the quarter, taking the lead.
Jacob Lubawy scored the first assisted by
Adam Rinker, and Rooney scored the second assisted by
Tanner Marsh. The Titans answered back with a goal of their own to tie the game at six a piece. The Cougars and Titans then took turns scoring goals until the Cougars scored a pair of goals to take a 9-7 lead. The Titans then stormed back scoring three straight goals between the final 1 ½ minutes of the third quarter and the first four minutes of the final quarter. That gave the Titans a 10-9 lead. The Cougars answered back when Marsh scored on an assist from
Broden Zumbano. That was quickly followed by Lubawy netting his second goal of the day to give the Cougars the lead yet again, this time 11-10.
Ethan Rinker continued his dominant day scoring his fourth goal to give the Cougars a two goal lead. Zumbano scored again, assisted by Lubawy to put the Cougars ahead by three. The Titans would not go away quietly however, scoring a pair of goals and pulling within one goal in the final minute.Â
The Cougars were led offensively by
Ethan Rinker who had 4 goals. Lubawy also had 2 goals and 2 assists and Rooney scored a pair of goals.
Cody Randal led the Cougars with 11 ground balls.
Paul Freyre had five caused turnovers, leading the team.
Zen Smith was in net for the Cougars and made 11 saves and had a 47.8% save rate. The Cougars converted 21 of 23 clear attempts and won 19 of 29 face offs with Randal winning 19 of his 27.
The Cougars will be back in action on April 9th when they return home for a match up with Allegheny at 7:30 P.M.
