GREENVILLE, Pa. - On Wednesday, the Cougars (7-5, 5-2 PAC) played a game that could go a long way in shaping what the postseason bracket looks like come tournament time. The Cougars and Thiel Tomcats (10-3, 4-3 PAC) came into this game both in a three way tie for third in the conference. A win tonight would mean a spot in the PAC tournament was locked up for the Cougars. They played like it as they took down the Tomcats in dominant fashion 13-5.
The Cougars started the game with their offense ready to go, scoring a pair of goals in the first minute of the game, first by
Bailey Donofrio and second by
Tessa Hueber who scored on an assist from
Izzy Davanti. Despite the Tomcats getting a goal back the Cougars offense continued the scoring as Donofrio scored her second of the game. The Tomcats scored once more before the end of the quarter, cutting the Cougars lead to 3-2 heading into the second quarter. Erin Goddwin scored her first goal of the game just over a minute into the second quarter to give the Cougars a two goal lead once again. The Tomcats continued to answer back however, scoring a goal of their own. Hueber scored her second goal of the game, once again assisted by Davanti with less than two minutes left before halftime. That gave the Cougars a 5-3 lead as the teams broke for halftime. After halftime, the Cougars pulled away as they scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter.
Sarah Holt scored her first goal of the game assisted by Davanti, her third assist of the game. After that, it was
Sam Beall-Dennell scoring back-to-back goals. Hueber scored her third goal of the game for the fourth goal of the quarter and then assisted Donofrio on her third goal of the game. The fourth quarter started with Beall-Dennell scoring her third goal of the game. After that the Tomcats tried to rally, scoring a pair of goals. That made the score 11-5 in favor of the Cougars. That would be all the closer the Tomcats got as the Cougars ended the game with back-to-back goals. Goodwin scored her second goal of the game assisted by
Dani MacConnell. Hueber closed out the game with her fourth goal of the game. That ended the game with the Cougars punching their playoff ticket with a 13-5 victory.
The Cougars were led by Hueber who had four goals and one assist for a team high five points. Beall-Dennell had a four point night with three goals and an assist. Goodwin had two goals and an assist for a three point night. Also finishing her night with three points was Davanti who had three assists which led the Cougars. Beall-Dennell led the Cougars in ground balls and caused turnovers with seven and four respectively.
Kaya Miller and Hueber each had five ground balls as well.
Meghan Cuza-Berry was in goal for the Cougars and made eight saves and finished with a 61.5% save rate. The Cougars completed 16 of 20 save attempts and held the Tomcats to just 12 of 22 on their clear attempts.Â
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday April 19th, when they finish non-conference play with a trip to Arlington, Va. for a 12 PM match up with Marymount.
