GROVE CITY, Pa. – Chatham Men's Basketball (17-3, 14-1) used a dominant second half to cruise to a 72-60 win over the Grove City Wolverines (13-7, 10-5) at the Grove City College Arena on Saturday.
Lovenson Xavier led the team in scoring with 20 points on 8-17 shooting and three rebounds.
Diaun Pinkett finished with 19 points on 7-14 shooting six rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block.
Simon Boyer recorded 10 points as the other Cougar in double-figures. He added four assists and a steal.
Zavea Green came off the bench to record nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, while
Blaine Gartley had seven assists, five rebounds and five steals to go along with five points.
Xavier scored the Cougars' first 10 points as the two teams play to a 10-10 tie in the first five minutes.
Hunter Verling was the first one to help Xavier, hitting a layup to make it 12-12, but the Wolverines scored six straight points off of layups to go up 18-12. Chatham answered with a 9-2 run that featured four points from Green and a three from Boyer to go up by one point. Then, after Grove City took back a four-point advantage, Pinkett closed the half with seven points in the final 4:09, including a jumper at the buzzer to send the Cougars into the half up 33-32. The tight first half featured seven ties and six lead changes.
The second half was started with a basket from the Wolverines, but it was immediately followed by a 16-0 Chatham run which had five points each from Boyer and Xavier. When it was finished, the Cougars led by 15. They would not lead by less than 11 points for the rest of the contest and led by as many as 18.
Chatham shot 47.5% (28-59) from the field and 36.4% (8-22) from beyond the arc, while Grove City shot 42.1% (24-57) from the field and 33.3% (5-15) from deep. The hosts dominated the boards, winning the battle 40-26, but committed 21 turnovers to Chatham's 10.
The Cougars will host Franciscan on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
