Pittsburgh, Pa. - On Saturday, the Cougars (2-11-1) hosted the Buffalo State Bengals (5-11-1) for Senior Recognition Day. The Cougars rallied for a 4-2 victory.
In the first period, the Bengals grew an early lead netting two goals and holding the Cougars scoreless. The Bengals were able to outshoot the Cougars 17-8 in the period and took an early lead into the break.
In the second period, neither team was able to break through and get a goal. The Cougars had one power play opportunity and were unable to convert on five shots on goal. The score stayed at 2-0 in favor of the Bengals as the teams went to the last period.
In the third period, the Cougars offense rose from their hibernation and got on the board six minutes into the period when new Cougar
Klara Miuller scored her first career goal assisted by
Rainey Jessup. That cut the Bengal lead to one. That would not last though as 30 seconds later
Chelsea Clark scored the equalizer assisted by Olivia McTavish and
Hailey Braaten. With nine minutes remaining in the game the Cougars found the go ahead and eventual game winning goal when
Sophia Taylor scored on the assists from
Klara Miuller and
Rainey Jessup. With 30 seconds left in the game
Klara Miuller scored an unassisted empty net goal to put the finishing touches on the Cougar victory. That made the final score 4-2 in favor of the Cougars.
Lindsey Batz made 45 saves in her second consecutive game between the pipes, giving her a 95.7% save percentage. Offensively the Cougars were led by Miuller and Jessup who both recorded multiple points. Defensively the Cougars were led by
Samantha Barrett (five blocks),
Erin Carter (four blocks) and
Payton Lloyd (four blocks).
The Cougars will be back in action on Friday January 24th when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. when the take on Nazareth with a 6:30 PM puck drop.
