GREENVILLE, Pa. – Chatham Women's Basketball (9-4, 7-2) dominated the Thiel Tomcats (0-14, 0-9) by the score of 97-49 on Monday night at the Beeghly Gymnasium.
The win marks the 100th career victory of head coach
David Saur. Saur, who took over a program that had never had a winning season, accomplished the feat in just 155 games.
Madison Nereu led the Cougars in scoring with 14 points on 7-10 shooting and six rebounds.
Leah Harkenrider and
Kendall Haymore each put up season highs with 11 points a piece. Haymore grabbed seven boards while Harkenrider tallied five assists.
Ashlie Louden and
Hannah Chenault each scored 10 points, while
Hannah Stephanites and
Talia Prosper each netted nine points, marking a career high for Stephanites and a season high for Prosper.
Chatham began the game on an 8-0 run with all eight points coming in the paint. Nereu netted four points on the run, while Chenault and
Charjae Brock each had two. After the Tomcats got on the board for the first time, the Cougars manufactured a 12-0 run, with four points each from Nereu and Louden. Chatham ended the first quarter with threes from Chenault and Harkenrider to take a 29-4 lead. The Cougars dominated on both ends of floor to start, collecting seven steals in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Chatham continued to turn defense into offense, with three steals and 11 fastbreak points. Nereu and Louden each scored six points in the second period to lead the Cougars to a 51-16 halftime lead.
Harkenrider opened the second half with a driving layup before Thiel put together a 9-2 run, making it 55-25, but Chatham responded with a 7-2 swing, with all seven points coming from Haymore. Stephanites and
Julia Calvin each connected on three-pointers before Prosper scored four straight points to put the Cougars up by 37 with one minute left in the third quarter. In the fourth, Chatham led by as many as 48 points, which ended as the margin of victory.
The Cougars shot 48.7% (38-78) from the field and 35.5% (11-31) from beyond the arc. They held the Tomcats to 28% (21-75) from the field and 7.4% (2-27) from deep. Chatham outrebounded Thiel 54-42 and forced 22 turnovers.
Chatham will hit the road again Wednesday to take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats.
