MARIETTA, Ohio - The Chatham Men's Soccer team started off their season tonight with a 1-0 win over Marietta College.
The two teams started out strong with Marietta getting the first shot from Petar Mijic Barisic that resulted in a save from the Chatham goalkeeper,
Maxwell Cottrill.Â
The game progressed with Marietta finding more of the opportunities, managing to get a few more shots off. The first real signs of life within the Cougars attack came from a shot by
Luke Matzelle that was saved by Marietta's keeper, Joey Backhaus.
After a bit of a deadlock between the two sides, Chatham would come out on top in the 24' minute. A Marietta foul caused by Lee Miller leads to a Chatham free kick from 35 yards out. The ball is chipped into the box where it stumbles around before finding itself at the feet of
Caleb Manse who took a shot that bounced off of the Marietta defense and right past Backhaus.Â
The two teams would eventually have to clear the field for a mandatory lightning delay before continuing the game.Â
When the game picked back up halfway through the first half, Marietta would continue to put their offense to work with shots from
Maxwell Cottrill, Taj Haidar and Lee Miller without anything going in the net.Â
The game would end with a Chatham win for their season opener.Â
The Chatham Men's Soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday September 3 against Fredonia at 6:00pm.Â
