WASHINGTON, Pa. - Baseball fell to the first place Washington and Jefferson Presidents Saturday afternoon, losing game one 6-3 and game two 3-1.
In game one, the Cougars three runs came in the final inning. Sophomore
Angelo DeLeonardis hit a two-run triple to right center that scored Senior
Frankie DeLuca and Senior
Benny Dottle. DeLeonardis then scored on a wild pitch. Junior Drew Shreck got the start for Chatham as he went four innings, scattered five hits, five runs (three earned), three walks and two strikeouts. Junior
Dawson Morrow was the first to relieve Shreck, as he went two scoreless innings. Junior
Kole Mayle threw the final two innings and gave up four hits and one run. The Presidents collected their runs in every other inning. One in the first, two in the third and fifth, and the final run in the seventh.
The Cougars had seven hits. Two from DeLeonardis and five other Cougars collected one hit.
In game two, the Presidents struck first with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning as Jacob LaDuca got things started with a leadoff triple down the right field line. They got their final run in the third as it was 3-0 Presidents. The Cougars answered in the top of the fourth with their only run of game two when
Benny Dottle came home on a wild pitch. Bats went quiet on both sides the remainder of the game as W&J defeated Chatham 3-1.
Sophomore
Nick Martin got through five innings of work. Martin gave up three hits, three runs, five walks, and seven strikeouts. Freshman
Gianni Cantini came in relief of Martin and threw the final three innings without giving up a run. Cantini had three strikeouts. The Cougars outhit the Presidents 5-4, but were on the losing end of the final box score.
Baseball moves to 7-13 (0-5) on the year. They will travel to Latrobe, PA on Tuesday for another PAC matchup vs the Saint Vincent Bearcats.
