STEUBENVILLE, Oh. - Today, Chatham baseball went on the road to take on the Franciscan Barons. The Cougars got a much needed sweep, keeping themselves in contention for the PAC playoffs. They won game one 16-1 and 20-5 in game two.
In game one, a four-run fourth and a seven-run fifth was all the Cougars would need in the game.
Freshman
Brandon Bell hit his first collegiate homerun in the fourth inning. In the following inning, Sophomore
Peter Tadic hit his fifth homerun, tying himself for first place all time in homeruns in a season. Tadic is now tied with fellow teammate Senior
Jake Bredl.
The Cougars tied their single-season hits record with 20 in game one.
Stats from game one: DeLeonardis (1-3, 2 RBI), Dottle (4-5, 3 R, 3 RBI), Bredl (3-4, 2 R, 4 RBI), Tadic (2-4, 3 RBI, HR), Bell (2-4, 1 R, RBI, HR), Cote (4-5, 3 R), DeLuca (2-3, 3 R).
Junior
Dawson Morrow got the start in game one for the Cougars. Morrow threw five scoreless innings, scattered three hits, three walks, and had three strikeouts.
In game two, the Cougars scored in every inning but the sixth. Chatham put up five runs in the first and third and scored three runs in the third, fifth, and seventh. While leading 20-4 going into the last inning, Franciscan was unable to score the seven runs needed to continue play and avoid the mercy rule.
Seven Cougars collected at least two hits and five of them recorded at least two RBI's. DeLeonardis (2-5, 2 R), Dottle (3-4, 2 RBI), Tadic (2-3, 2 R), Kelley (2-3, 3 R, 2 RBI), Bell (3-4, 3 R, 3 RBI), Cote (3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI), DeLuca (3-4, 2 R, 4 RBI).
With 22 hits in game two, that now breaks the single game run record which was previously set last year vs Bethany. The Cougars also tied their single game run record with 20, which they set at Pitt-Greensburg last year.
Junior
Drew Schreck kept the Baron hitters in check. The junior hurler lasted 5.1 innings, gave up five hits, four runs (three earned), and had three strikeouts.
With the sweep, the Cougars improve to 14-15 (6-7) overall. They will travel to West Virginia University tomorrow where they will play the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. It will be a single game, as Chatham and Waynesburg played game one earlier this year. Waynesburg won that contest 13-2. Game is expected to start at 2 PM with Chatham as the home team.
