Baseball Falls To Waynesburg; More Records Broken

GRANVILLE, Wv. - On Sunday, baseball hit the road for a home game to finish up the season series versus the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. The Cougars were defeated in the game by the score of 15-7.

The Cougars got out to an early 3-0 lead after three innings when they scored one run in each of the first three innings. The scoring began in the first when leadoff hitter and Sophomore Angelo DeLeonardis launched the first pitch Chatham saw over the left field fence. The homerun marks the first of DeLeonardis' career. In the second, Junior Tyler Cote continued his hot streak by hitting an rbi double to right that scored Freshman Brandon Bell. After Senior's Benny Dottle and Jake Bredl singled, Sophomore Caleb Jones hit an rbi double in the third as Chatham led 3-0 after three innings. Waynesburg would finally respond in the fourth with three runs to even the ballgame at 3-3. The Cougars regained the lead in the fifth when designated hitter Caleb Jones hit an inside-the-park homerun. Chatham got one more run in the sixth off of a Angelo DeLeonardis sac fly. The Yellow Jackets responded with a run in the top of the seventh, to trim the lead to 5-4 in favor of Chatham. The score wouldn't stay that way for long. Sophomore Peter Tadic blasted his sixth homerun of the 2024 campaign to give Chatham a 7-4 lead.  Things stayed that way until the ninth. Waynesburg's bats caught fire as they started the final frame with 11 straight hits. They proceeded to score 11 total runs in the inning as Chatham was defeated 15-7.

With Tadic's homerun in the seventh, he sits first in program history with six homeruns which is now a single season record. The record was already broken once this year by fellow teammate Jake Bredl who hit his fifth on March 28th.

Junior Carter Beneigh got the ball for the Cougars. Beneigh lasted 6.1 innings, gave up five hits, four runs, four walks, and had four strikeouts. With the four strikeouts, Beneigh now sits at 40 strikeouts this season which is a new single season record for the program. Beneigh moves ahead of fellow high school and college teammate, Junior Dawson Morrow who had 39 strikeouts last year.

The Cougars had 15 hits in the contest. Caleb Jones was 3-4 and a single away from the cycle. Benny Dottle, Jake Bredl, Peter Tadic, Brandon Bell, and Frankie DeLuca each had two hits in the contest.

Baseball moves to 14-16 (6-8) overall. They'll get a quick break from PAC play as they will travel to Oberlin on Tuesday and La Roche on Thursday. Game at Oberlin is scheduled for a 4:30 PM start as it is a single nine inning game.
