LEESBURG, FL. - March 5, 2024 - On Tuesday, softball had another doubleheader featuring the Alfred Saxons and the Elizabethtown Blue Jays. The Cougars lost game one 9-3 and 5-4 in game two.
In game one, Sophomore
Victoria Murren took the mound once again for the Cougars. Neither team scored in the first two innings but in the third, the Saxons scored four runs thanks to a few RBI singles. In the bottom of the fourth, Junior
Isabelle Griswold hit a solo homerun which was her first of the season and fourth overall as a Chatham Cougar. Sophomore
Shianne Walker followed Griswold up with a double down the left field line that scored
Kayleen Garcia to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Saxons. Freshman
Sofia Catanzaro hit a single up the middle bringing home
Irene Martin in the fifth. The Saxons scored five total runs in the last three innings to give them a comfortable lead as they won the game 9-3.
Griswold was 2-4 with a homerun and five other Cougars tallied a hit in game one.
In game two, the Blue Jays scored one run in innings two through five. The Cougars got on the board in the top half of the fourth when Sophomore
Irene Martin hit her first collegiate homerun. In the fifth, Martin was hit by a pitch that brought home Garcia. The next batter Griswold singled to right field to tie the game 3-3. The Bluejays answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, regaining the lead. However, the Cougars wouldn't go down without a fight. They tied the game in the sixth when Sophomore
Kayleen Garcia grounded out to short and scored Catanzaro. The Blue Jays had the opportunity to walk it off against the Cougars and that's exactly what they did. In the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Jays hit a double to left center that ended the game.
Irene Martin was 1-3 with a homerun, Freshman
Sofia Catanzaro was 3-3, and Freshman
Mia Peticca was 3-3 in game two.
Softball has an off day tomorrow but will return to play Thursday morning for a doubleheader vs Mount Union and Alvernia. Those games are slated for 9 AM and 11:15 AM.
