MUNHALL, Pa. - Softball had their home opener Tuesday night in which it was a chilly one. The Cougars split with Carlow, winning game one 6-1, and losing game two by the score of 11-2 in six innings.
In game one, the Cougars scored the first runs of the game in the first thanks to some Carlow miscues. Freshman
Sofia Catanzaro stole second, and Grad
Kyley Fijalkowski scored via an error by the second baseman. Sophomore
Victoria Murren then reached on an error by the first baseman that scored Catanzaro. In the third, Murren helped her cause by singling to right field and Grad
Savanna Ahlborn followed her up with a double that scored Murren to extend the lead to 4-0. The Celtics scraped their lone run across in the fifth despite not recording a hit. And then in the fifth, Sophomore
Hannah Chenault hit a two run single to left center which made the score 6-1. The Celtics recorded their first hit of the game in the final inning and with two outs.
Victoria Murren was on the mound for the Cougars as she was efficient throughout the game. Murren hurled seven impressive innings, giving up one hit, one run (unearned), and six strikeouts. Catanzaro, Murren, and Ahlborn each recorded two hits in game one.Â
In game two, Murren received the start once again after her strong performance in game one. Game two didn't go as planned for Murren as she went only three innings, gave up five hits, 3 runs, (two earned), two walks and strikeouts. The Celtics scored one run in the second, two in the third, and four in the fourth. Thru four innings, the Celtics led the Cougars 7-2. Carlow would score four more runs in the sixth inning making it 11-2 and the Cougars were unable to score in the bottom half as that put the mercy rule into effect.Â
The Cougars scattered seven hits. Both Murren and Chenault were 2-3 in the contest. The Cougars also had six errors as only six of the eleven runs were earned.Â
Softball will look to bounce back tomorrow as they travel to Ohio to take on the Denison Big Red Buzzards tomorrow in a doubleheader.
