Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Oh. - Baseball traveled to Lancaster, Ohio Saturday morning for a double header versus the Bluffton University Beavers. The games were played at a neutral site just over two hours away from Bluffton. The Cougars won game one 9-7 and lost game two by the score of 12-7 resulting in a split for the day.
In game one, the Cougars scored the first two runs of the game in the opening frame after Sophomore
Caleb Jones hit a line drive off the pitcher resulting in a fielders choice that scored leadoff hitter Senior
Benny Dottle. The next batter Sophomore
Angelo DeLeonardis hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Senior
Jake Bredl. In the fourth with the score still 2-0, Sophomore
Peter Tadic came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit one off the scoreboard for his first collegiate grand slam to extend the Cougar lead to 6-0. The Cougars scored their last three runs on miscues by the Beavers in the fifth inning. Bluffton got on the board in the sixth with a solo homerun, and then followed it up with a six-run seventh inning to make the final score 9-7 as neither team scored in the last two innings.
Junior
Carter Beneigh had the starting pitching duties as he went 5.2 innings, scattered five hits and the lone run given up being a solo homerun. Beneigh had six strikeouts.
Benny Dottle was 3-4 with three runs scored, Tadic was 1-4 with a HR and four RBI's, and Junior
Tyler Cote was 2-4 and collected his PAC-leading fourth save on the year.
In game two, the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the first.
Caleb Jones had an RBI single,
Tyler Cote drew a walk that scored a run, and
Angelo DeLeonardis scored on a passed ball. Bluffton responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first after three straight RBI walks. The Beavers added five more in the second thanks to a grand slam of their own. The Beavers added some insurance runs in the fifth and sixth inning as the Cougars were not able to overcome the early eight runs given up between the first two innings.
The Cougars collected 11 hits in game two. Seven of them from Senior
Frankie DeLuca who was 3-5,
Jake Bredl who was 2-5 with a HR, and
Caleb Jones who was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Sophomore
Tommy Schubert threw two scoreless innings in relief.
Baseball will continue non-conference play on Tuesday as they will travel to Greensburg, PA to take on the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats.
