PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Chatham Men's Lacrosse (1-1) earned its first win of the year with a 14-5 victory over the Marietta Pioneers (0-2) at UPMC Graham Field on Wednesday night. The Cougars got their 14 goals from 10 different scorers in an all-around offensive attack.
Freshman
Tanner Marsh led the way with six points on two goals and four assists while classmate
Brady Rigdon added a goal and three assists for four points. Sophomores
Trent Griffin (two goals and one assist) and
Jacob Lubawy (one goal and two assists) each collected three points. Junior
Ethan Rinker and sophomore
Alex Stanuikynas each netted two goals. Senior Issac Joshi, junior
Thomas Curtin and freshmen
Tyler Laughlin and
Luke Iovino each scored in the win, with Laughlin and Iovino's markers coming as the first of their careers.
After five scoreless minutes to start the game, Joshi put the Cougars on the board and Griffin increased the lead to 2-0 just over three minutes later. The Pioneers answered with their first goal at 3:39, but Iovino and Curtin scored just twelve seconds apart in the following minute to give the Cougars a 4-1 advantage.
In the second quarter, Rigdon provided a quick score at 13:43 before the Pioneers took advantage on a man-up opportunity with a goal in response. Markers from Rinker and Laughlin made it 7-2, but a late goal cut it to 7-3 before halftime.
A low scoring third period saw just two goals from Stanuikynas and Marsh as Chatham locked down defensively. A score from Lubawy and another from Stanuikynas made it four unanswered for the Cougars. Marsh, Griffin and Rinker all scored in a 2:37 span to finish the scoring for Chatham.
Shots on goal were 37-16 in favor of the Cougars and Chatham dominated the turnover battle 29-15. Both teams attempted 26 clears, with the Cougars completing 22 and the Pioneers just 14.
