NEW CONCORD, Ohio - Chatham Men's Lacrosse (2-1) came away with a non-conference road victory over the Muskingum (4-1) Fighting Muskies by the score of 12-7 at the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex on Saturday. The previously undefeated Muskies were unable to keep up with the Cougars' offensive attack in the second half, as Chatham outscored Muskingum 8-3 over the final two quarters after an even first half.
Leading the Cougars attack was freshman
Tanner Marsh who racked up eight points on six goals and two assists. Marsh leads the team with 15 points and nine goals this season, including 14 points and eight goals in the last two games. Sophomore
Trent Griffin and first year
Brady Rigdon each recorded three points on two goals and an assist while sophomore
Jacob Lubawy tallied three assists. Senior Issac Joshi and junior
Thomas Curtin each found the back of the net and senior
Riley Lewis picked up his first assist of the year.
Defensively, freshman
Jack Neal caused three turnovers and totaled two ground balls while Curtin had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman
Devin Traister was 9-18 in the faceoff circle and picked up seven ground balls. In net, sophomore
Brett Zaruba made nine saves to pick up the win.
Chatham struck first at 5:46 with a goal from Rigdon, but Muskingum answered with a goal just 49 seconds later. Marsh scored a man-up goal with 53 seconds left in the quarter to give the Cougars the lead once again.
The second quarter scoring started with two Muskie goals within seven seconds of each other and then a goal from Marsh just 39 seconds after that. Muskingum took a 4-3 lead after a scoring drought of almost 10 minutes, but the game was knotted up at 4 with another marker from Marsh which was assisted by Lewis.
The Cougars threatened to run away with it in the third quarter with four goals in the first 5:49, including two from Marsh, to take an 8-4 lead. But the Muskies would respond for the next three goals to make it 8-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Chatham kept Muskingum off the board entirely in the final frame, and goals from Curtin, Griffin, Marsh and Joshi provided a comfortable cushion.
