PITTSBURGH - Chatham Men's Basketball (3-1, 2-0) rolled their way to a 92-73 victory over the Saint Vincent Bearcats (2-2, 0-1) on Wednesday night at the Athletic and Fitness Center. The win was the 100th of head coach
David Richards' career. Coach Richards, who is in his seventh season with Chatham, accomplished the feat in just 152 career games.
Diaun Pinkett guided the Cougars to victory with 24 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Pinkett was 8-12 from the field and added two blocks.
Lovenson Xavier netted 20 points on 8-10 shooting with three three-pointers and six rebounds.
Simon Boyer scored 13 points and racked up five assists with four rebounds.
Blaine Gartley also tallied five assists to go along with eight points and two steals.
Luca Robinson scored in double figures for the second straight game, putting up 10 points on 5-7 shooting.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the opening minute before the Cougars put together a 10-4 run over the next three minutes, which included six points from the free-throw line. Chatham tried to pull away with threes from Xavier and
Easton Fulmer, but Saint Vincent responded each time to keep the game within one possession. The Bearcats took the lead on a three with 9:57 left in the first half and extended that lead with a layup, but the Cougars answered back and closed the half on an extended 22-10 run which featured seven points from Xavier and five from Boyer.
Chatham threatened to pull away in the opening minutes of the second half, but Saint Vincent stuck around and cut the Cougar lead to six with 16:06 left. However, that's as close as they would get for the remainder of the game, as a 19-6 Chatham run over the next six minutes put the game out of reach. The Cougars led by as many as 29 down the stretch, not letting off the gas pedal at all.
Chatham shot 57.6% (34-59) from the field and 38.9% (7-18) from long range, while Saint Vincent was 43.3% (26-60) from the field and 28.6% (4-14) from long distance. The Cougars out-rebounded the Bearcats 39-29 while each team made 17 free throws and committed 20 fouls.
The Cougars will hit the court again Saturday afternoon at Allegheny. That game will be broadcasted on the PAC Sports Network.
