WASHINGTON, Pa. - January 20, 2024 - Chatham Women's Basketball (15-3, 11-2) saw its 14-game win streak end with a 84-61 loss to the W&J Presidents (15-2, 11-1) on Saturday at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium. It was the Cougars' first loss since Nov. 15 at Saint Vincent.
Junior guard
Aurielle Brunner and sophomore guard
Hannah Chenault each scored 14 points to lead the squad. Brunner recorded four rebounds, four steals and three assists while Chenault buried four three-pointers. Graduate guard
Kaitlyn Fertig netted eight points with three rebounds and three steals. Junior guard
Emily Durkee tallied six points on two threes and led the team with five assists.
The Cougars scored the opening basket of the game and forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, but the Presidents scored the next 16 points to take command early. By the end of the first quarter, W&J would lead 27-5 after the Cougars went 2-15 (13.3%) from the field including 0-7 from deep. The second quarter was much of the same, as the Presidents shot 10-16 (62.5%) from the field and 3-6 (50%) from three-point range to take a 33-point lead into halftime. The Chatham offense picked up the pace in the third quarter with five triples to cut the lead to 20, but could not get closer than 17 in the final quarter.
The Cougars shot 40 three-pointers in the contest, their most of the season, and only knocked down 10. The Presidents shot 53.6% (30-56) from the field, which is the highest field-goal percentage Chatham has allowed this year. The Cougars still forced 22 turnovers, but only scored 19 points as a result.
Women's Basketball will return to the Athletics and Fitness Center on Wednesday when they matchup with the Bethany Bison.
