PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2024) - Sophomore Nick Cyprian's game-tying goal was squandered in the Cougars' overtime loss to Alvernia (9-5-1, 7-4-0). The Golden Wolves fended off the comeback by not allowing a shot in the extra period, ending the game at the 1:38 mark of overtime. Chatham now stands at 5-8-0 overall and 4-7-0 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play.
The Golden Wolves netted the first goal of the game midway through the first. During that period, Chatham racked up five total penalties and had sophomore Cristian Adragna ejected with 3:05 left in the period.
In the second, Alvernia added another goal at the 6:10 mark. Then, 15 seconds later freshman Kyle Contessa scored his second career goal on a solo shot bringing the score to 2-1. Both teams combined for seven penalties in the second period, resulting in three power play opportunities. Neither team was successful during those man-up situations.
The final period once again presented both sides with power play opportunities to extend or take the lead, but both teams failed to do so. Finally, with 2:10 left in the period, the Cougars emptied their net a man down and Cyprian was able to score the equalizer to force overtime.
The Golden Wolves made swift work of the extra time and scored the game-ending goal 1:38 into overtime. The Cougars did not get a shot off during that span.
Chatham will match up with Alvernia again on Saturday at 6 p.m.
