Men's Hockey Drops Season Series Against Alvernia

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 13, 2024) - The Cougars were defeated by the Golden Wolves (10-5-1, 8-4-0) 5-3 Saturday night. After returning from break, Chatham is 0-2 and 5-9 overall on the year.

Alvernia took an early two-goal lead seven and a half minutes into the opening period. The Cougars responded four minutes later on a power play score by freshman Kyle Contessa with assists from sophomore Nick Cyprian and junior Zack Conner. The period closed with Alvernia leading on the scoreboard and on the shot count 12-8.

In the second, Alvernia notched another point 17 seconds into the period. Three minutes later, Cyprian found the back of the net on another Chatham power play with sophomore Caden Smith and Contessa assisting. Then, with 22 seconds left the Golden Wolves extended their lead to 4-2.

During the final period, both teams added another goal to their total (5-3). Freshman Milan Cermak was assisted by junior Matthew Doyle and freshman Nicholas Babbie for his first career goal to bring the Cougars within two scores. But with the remaining 10 minutes of play, Chatham was not successful on their fourth power play. The Purple and Grey nearly doubled Alvernia's shots (15-8) in the third but were warded off.

Overall, three different Chatham players scored. This game was the third time that the Cougars netted two power-play goals, though this is the first that the end result was a loss.
