NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - April 29, 2023 - Chatham Baseball split its Saturday doubleheader against the Westminster Titans with a game one loss by the score of 9-4 and a 8-5 win in game two. The Cougars are now 18-16 on the season and 9-9 in the PAC.
In game one, the Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a sac fly from graduate catcher
Caleb Lehman. However, the Titans answered with three runs in the third and six more in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead. Chatham got two back in the fifth with a two-run single from senior third baseman
Brandon Griener and scored another in the sixth as junior infielder
Benny Dottle plated junior outfielder
Dylan Vogel with a double, but were unable to push closer.
Vogel went 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored in game one. Junior infielder
Jake Bredl was 3-5 with a stolen base. Sophomore right hander
Drew Schreck threw 4.2 scoreless innings in relief.
In game two, the Cougars built themselves an even bigger first inning lead with a four spot in the opening frame. Sophomore catcher
Tyler Cote singled to score Bredl, then came around to score on a two-run homer from sophomore first baseman
Quinn Burke. The fourth run of the inning came when first year outfielder
Peter Tadic drove in classmate
Jason Boller with a single.
The Titans scored three runs in the third inning to cut the Cougar lead to 4-3, but Chatham made it 5-3 as Cote doubled and brought in Lehman in the fifth. The lead would grow back to four when Bredl hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot that scored Vogel.
In the eighth, Westminster tallied two runs to make it 7-5, but the Cougars again responded as Burke drove in Cote for a second time, this time with a double to go up 8-5.
Burke went 4-5 in the game with three RBI and a run scored. Cote was 3-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored and later came in to shut things down on the mound, earning his second save of the season. Graduate pitcher
Eric Paulin, who started on the rubber for Chatham, struck out four in 6.0 innings and earned the win.
Baseball will return to the field Monday with a road doubleheader against Franciscan.
