Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Season Opener Loss at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio - February 18, 2023 - Chatham Men's Lacrosse opened their season this afternoon at Oberlin College. The Yeomen would defend their home turf with a 17-7 win in their favor.

Oberlin came out with a four-goal lead early before sophomore Paul Freyre scored, helped by classmate Ethan Rinker for his first assist of the season. Before the quarter was out, first-year Thomas Whitaker scored his collegiate first, an assist going to junior captain Isaac Joshi.

In the second, Oberlin would come out with another four before Trent Griffin scored his first career goal, and sophomore Ethan Rinker would follow with his first of the season.

Chatham's third straight goal would be scored by newcomer Jacob Lubawy, and classmate Thomas Whitaker would take advantage of a man-up opportunity for Chatham's sixth goal.

The loan goal of the fourth quarter and the final of the game was again scored by Rinker.

Whitaker and Clark Styles both had a team-high six ground balls. Styles also went 18 for 24 on face-offs.

In goal, sophomore Zen Smith made five saves on 15 shots. First year Brett Zaruba stopped eight of 15 shots on goal.

The Cougars are back in action this coming Wednesday, February 22nd, at Marietta for another non-conference matchup.
