Women's Hockey Suffers Shootout Loss to Nazareth

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Dec. 2, 2023) - After holding a one-goal lead for the majority of the game, the Cougars fell to Nazareth (5-1-1, 5-0-1) in a shootout. The Cougar's defense prevented the Golden Flyers from scoring until 50 seconds remained.

Senior Abi Fuzaylov's unassisted goal would mark the first points of the game. In the opening period, the Cougars were down in the shot count 14-2 but scored on their second shot. The Golden Flyers had a chance to take the lead early into the period on a power play but missed all four of their attempts.

A scoreless second period saw the shots on goal favor Nazareth again 14-4. Chatham had a power play but failed to get a shot off during that time. The Cougars headed into the final period with a one-goal advantage but trailed in shots 28-6.

In the third, Nazareth once again outshot Chatham 17-3, and with 50 seconds left the Golden Flyers netted their first goal. The Cougars had a chance to increase their lead earlier in the period but were held to zero shots once again. The tied game went into overtime where neither team could break away.

Fifth-year Brooke Almond was up first in the shootout for Chatham but missed. Nazareth would score on their first attempt, and there was no answer from senior Kaylynn Savoy. The Golden Flyers would finish the game on the subsequent shot, winning the season series against the Cougars.

The Purple and Gray's defense was not enough to hold off #14 ranked Nazareth, but the team set a new season high in blocks at 34. Junior Samantha Barrett recorded nine blocks on the afternoon, while senior Lilly Rogers made 51 saves on 52 shots (.981). Barrett leads the United Collegiate Hockey Conference in blocks (31) and Rogers is second in save percentage (.966).

Women's Hockey returns to the ice on Dec. 8 at Neumann.
