PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 8, 2022 – Chatham overcame an early four-run deficit but eventually fell thanks to a big seventh inning by Geneva, defeating the Cougars 7-4. Chatham's record dips to 6-12 overall and 0-9 in PAC play.
Geneva started off the game by scoring twice in the first and second innings. The first saw a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, while the second inning provided another RBI base hit and a wild pitch. Both of the second inning runs were unearned.
With the score reading 4-0 after two innings, Chatham started to claw back in the fourth. Sophomore
Frankie DeLuca sacrificed the first run, while senior
Caleb Lehman cleared the pillows with a two-RBI triple, his 13
th of his historic Chatham career. Lehman was left stranded in the bottom of the fourth.
Chatham tied the game in the fifth after first-year
Quinn Burke blasted a solo home run towards the West Field scoreboard. With the defense providing a quality outing captained by junior
Eric Paulin on the mound, it came unraveled in the seventh when Geneva got an RBI base hit to go up 5-4, then a two-run single to provide insurance.
Despite the loss, Chatham had baserunners in all nine innings and had at least one base hit in every inning with the exception of the first. Both teams had nine base hits, but the Cougars' downfall came with runners left stranded, leaving 11 on base.
Burke had a 3/5 night with the home run and two runs scored. Six different Cougars had one base hit, including Lehman, sophomore
Dylan Vogel, junior
Brandon Griener, senior
Nico Cuello, first-year
Tyler Cote and senior
Luke Paulson. Paulson's base hit was a double, while Cuello laced a triple.
Cote started the game and went 2.0 innings after striking out four Golden Tornadoes. Paulin went 4.2 innings and had a solid outing before taking the loss in the seventh. The game was finished by first-year
Drew Schreck, who fanned a pair.
Chatham now has a much-needed break before beginning a three-day stretch where it plays five games. It begins with a non-conference double header at Medaille on Sunday April 10 starting at 2:00.
