BUFFALO, N.Y. – April 10, 2022 – After a difficult stretch, the Chatham University Baseball team got back in the win column in grand style Sunday, triumphing over Medaille in a doubleheader sweep by scores of 6-2 and 6-5. The Cougars are 8-12 on the year following the victories.

Chatham began the contest falling behind 2-0 in the second off of a pair of errors. However, the Cougars got runs in every inning onward starting in the third. First-year
Tyler Cote started the scoring with a 2-RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. Then, in the fourth, senior
Luke Paulson doubled in the leading run while sophomore
Frankie DeLuca sacrificed the fourth.

In the fifth and sixth, a pair of Maverick mishaps permitted Chatham to go ahead 6-2. The fifth inning saw a bases loaded wild pitch scoring the fifth run, then senior
Caleb Lehman scored on an error by the Medaille third baseman.

Chatham and Medaille both had six runs and three errors apiece. However, three of the Cougars' base hits went for extras, which helped turn the tide for good. Lehman went 2/4 with two runs scored.

First-year
Dawson Morrow got his first collegiate win after a strong 5.1 innings pitched with a quartet of strikeouts. Classmate
Kole Mayle got the save and allowed one hit in 1.2 innings.

In the second game, the Cougars were the team striking first. Once again, the third inning was what started the scoring, beginning with an RBI single by sophomore
Dylan Vogel then another two scored on the swing by junior
Cole Couchman.

Medaille had the response in the fourth inning, five of them to be exact. A wild pitch, sacrifice fly, a double and a two-RBI single made up the Maverick rally.

However, Chatham got three in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead for good. Firstly, Lehman reached on a fielder's choice but on that decision the Maverick second baseman committed an error allowing Paulson to score. Junior
Brandon Griener tied the game with an RBI single, then later scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

The biggest difference for Chatham from game one to game two was the fielding. The Cougars did not commit an error in game two while Medaille had issues on three separate plays, two of them being instrumental in the Cougar comeback. Chatham outhit Medaille 11-7, led by Cote's 3/4 line in game two. Griener also was 2/4 with a pair of runs scored.

Pitching wise, three Chatham hurlers combined for the win. Junior
JJ Shibest started and went 3.1 innings, allowing four hits all in the fourth inning. Senior
Mason Akers relieved Shibest and got the win in 2.2 innings of work, striking out a trio in the process. First-year
Drew Schreck earned his first collegiate save after getting the final three outs.

Chatham re-enters PAC play tomorrow at Geneva College, facing the Golden Tornadoes in a double header beginning at 2:00.
