PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 3, 2022 – Chatham baseball had high hopes coming into Sunday's chilly double header with Saint Vincent, but those hopes were dashed when the Cougars fell in identical 3-2 final scores to the Bearcats. The Cougars' record falls to 6-11 overall.
In game one, Chatham fell behind 3-0 after three and a half despite a strong defensive start. It began with an RBI single in the second, an RBI double in the fourth and then a wild pitch that brought home all three of SVC's runs.
Despite this, the Cougars persevered and were able to get two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The first was scored after an error committed by the Bearcat shortstop permitted that run to score, then first-year
Tyler Cote singled in the second run in the bottom of the sixth. It was one of four base hits the Cougars had all game one, but Chatham could not break through in the end as it fell 3-2.
Sophomore
Dylan Vogel, senior
Caleb Lehman, junior
Brandon Griener and Cote were the culprits of all four of Chatham's base hits. On the mound, senior
Ryan Denz pitched five solid innings despite taking the loss. He was relieved by first-year
Kole Mayle, who finished the sixth and seventh frames.
The second game saw both teams score in the first on a defensive gaffe and wise decision making at the plate. The Bearcats' two runs came by a double to center and a passed ball. For Chatham, senior
Nico Cuello walked with the bases loaded and then a SAC fly by first-year
Brady Wingeart scored the two runs.
The game was played to a stalemate for the next six innings. After a two-out triple by Saint Vincent, the winning run came around on a passed ball which resulted in the 3-2 final.
Chatham was outhit 6-5 despite putting seven baserunners aboard via walks. Lehman became the Cougars' all-time leader in that category after being walked twice. He alongside Cote, first-year
Sam Helton, Vogel and pinch-hitter
Frankie DeLuca laced a base knock.
First-year
Dawson Morrow got the start and went 4.0 innings and struck out a pair. Classmate
Drew Schreck followed and tossed a marvelous six strikeout gem in relief and despite giving up the winning run, it came unearned.
The Cougars begin a six-game stretch for the week, starting with the series finale against Washington & Jefferson at home at 7:30 on Wednesday, April 6.
