Cuello’s Grand Slam Catapults Chatham to Victory

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 26, 2022 – In a resumed game from April 11, the Chatham baseball team erased a 5-0 deficit to spring to an 11-6 win over Geneva at West Field. The Cougars are now 11-18 overall and 3-15 in PAC play.

The Golden Tornadoes took a 5-0 lead in the third after getting four across in the opening frame played at West Field. The Cougars were able to get one in on a wild pitch which scored first-year Anthony Sciulli. In the fifth, three straight knocks allowed Sciulli to score two on a ground rule double, then he came around on an error committed by the Geneva defense.

In the sixth, a combination of two walks and a base hit loaded the bases for senior Nico Cuello, who popped his first home run of the year out to straightaway center for the grand slam and the lead. While Geneva scored one in the seventh, another dinger by senior Caleb Lehman put the lead back at three for Chatham, this one a solo star scraper. Another error allowed first-year Sam Helton and Cuello to score as well, putting the game out of reach.

Chatham was outhit for the game 11-8 but another critical component came in the walks. The Cougars were awarded nine free passes, tied for a season high and makes it 18 walks in the last two games. Lehman, Cuello and first-year Tyler Cote each had a pair of hits.

While sophomore Dominic Costellic started and went 2.0 innings in the delayed portion of the game, first-year Drew Schreck shined brightly after going 6.1 innings, allowing three runs but none of them earned. He fanned two Golden Tornadoes. The game was concluded by senior Ryan Denz.

Chatham hosts Franciscan for a 7:30 start in a nine-inning game tomorrow, April 27 at West Field.
