Cougars Lead Evaporates Against Franciscan

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 27, 2022 – The Chatham University baseball team held a slim lead midway through the contest that went up in smoke at a chilly West Field, falling 6-2 to the Franciscan Barons. The Cougars' record dips to 11-19 overall and 3-16 PAC play.

Franciscan had back-to-back-to-back one-out base hits to go up 1-0 in the first. However, the Cougars found themselves taking advantage of Franciscan miscues in the bottom of the third. The first run was scored on a wild pitch, bringing home sophomore Frankie DeLuca. Then after an error by the catcher scored senior Nico Cuello to put Chatham ahead 2-1.

That lead lasted an inning and a half. Franciscan went ahead 3-2 after a two-RBI single, then added some insurance on an additional RBI single. In the sixth, Chatham surrendered another two on a two-RBI knock, putting the final score at 6-2.

Chatham gave up 16 base hits and only had five of its own. Five different Barons had multiple base hits, with DeLuca, Cuello, senior Caleb Lehman, junior Brandon Griener and first-year Quinn Burke responsible for the base hits.

First-year Dawson Morrow started and took the loss in 4.2 innings of action, striking out five. Junior Eric Paulin concluded the fifth inning while first-year Kole Mayle went the final four innings, setting down four.

Chatham returns home in 48 hours, hosting Grove City on Friday, April 29 at West Field beginning at 7:30.
