PITTSBURGH, Pa. – April 16, 2022 – The Chatham University baseball team picked up its first conference wins of 2022, 6-0 and 3-2, over Bethany at home Saturday afternoon. The Cougars' record is now 10-15 overall and 2-12 in PAC play.
After a scoreless first, Chatham did some damage in the second inning. Four consecutive batters had RBI's, starting with first-year
Quinn Burke's single, followed by a SAC bunt by senior
Luke Paulson, a triple by first-year
Sam Helton and then a SAC fly by sophomore
Frankie DeLuca.
The latter two runs came in the fifth and sixth. First-year
Tyler Cote hit a SAC fly of his own to put the Cougars ahead 5-0, then senior
Nico Cuello added some insurance with an RBI single.
It was a stellar outing all around for Chatham, collecting seven base hits offensively, two off the bat of Burke First-year
Sam Helton had a second-inning triple while sophomore
Dylan Vogel doubled.
Pitching wise, the Cougars put together their best outing of the season. They surrendered just one base hit in the seven-inning affair. Sophomore
Dominic Costellic started and got the win in impressive fashion, hurling five innings and striking out seven batters, allowing just three base runners. First-year
Tyler Cote concluded the game and retired all six batters he faced.
In game two, Chatham picked up right where it left off. The Cougars led the game off with three consecutive base hits, with junior
Brandon Griener tailing that run with an RBI single to put Chatham up 1-0. The Bison tied the game at one in the next half inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, a two-out double by DeLuca jump started the Cougar bats again, with Cuello immediately following up with an RBI base hit. Bethany went on to find the equalizer in the sixth and tie the game at 2-2.
The game seemed destined for extras with neither team able to break through. Then, in the eighth, Burke blasted a low but far ball deep to center that cleared the wall for his second home run of the season. The Cougars then chased Bethany's skipper out with a base hit by senior
Luke Paulson despite leaving him stranded.
Game two saw more action than game one hitting wise, with the Cougars roping 10 base hits and Bethany mustering seven. Cuello had a 3/5 day while senior
Caleb Lehman poked in two base hits. Helton and DeLuca were the culprits of the remaining base hits, with DeLuca hitting a double

Eric Paulin started and went 6.0 innings and only gave up two runs, one of which was earned. First-year
Kole Mayle started the seventh and gave up a hit, while first-year
Dawson Morrow went 2.1 innings, getting the win in the process.
Chatham heads to Thiel on Friday, April 22 for a nine-inning game at 4:00.
