GREENVILLE, Pa. – April 22, 2022 – The Chatham University baseball team could not ride the momentum created six days ago, falling 12-4 to Thiel College Friday afternoon. The Cougars' record falls to 10-16 overall and 2-13 in PAC play.
The Cougars got the game out started well with a leadoff single and walk, before first-year
Tyler Cote singled in the game's first run in the top of the first. The Cougars loaded them up early but could not bring around the next few runs, settling for the one-run lead.
After a strong defensive start, the Cougars surrendered runs in each of the next four innings. Three in the second, one in the third, another three in the fourth and four in the fifth had Thiel firmly in control 11-1 in the middle portion of the game.
It wasn't all doom and gloom, however, as the Cougars got three in the sixth and seventh. A sacrifice fly by senior
Luke Paulson gave Chatham some life, while junior
Brandon Griener smashed a two-run homer to left. Thiel countered with the final run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh.
Chatham was outhit 18-6 for the game and coughed up three errors in the field. First-year
Quinn Burke went 2/4 to lead the way, while senior
Nico Cuello and sophomore
Frankie DeLuca added additional hits.
Sophomore
Dominic Costellic started and took the loss after going three innings. First-year
JJ Shibest got the first two outs of the fourth before being relieved by senior
Mason Akers. All pitching one inning were sophomore
Mason Schwartz, junior
Cole Couchman, and senior
Kelli Jenkins.
The Cougars and the Tomcats lock horns again tomorrow at West Field for a PAC doubleheader starting at 4:00.
