PITTSBURGH, Pa. – February 7, 2022 – It didn't come easy, but the Chatham men's basketball team pulled through in the end thanks to a strong second half to put away Grove City 74-64. The second straight come-from-behind victory improves Chatham to 17-1 overall and 12-1 in PAC play, breaking the program record for most conference wins in a season.
The first half was a defensive struggle between the two teams, much like what the Cougars dealt with just over 48 hours prior. Chatham fell behind by four at the halftime break after shooting just 22% from the floor, with all but two baskets coming from three.
In the second half, the Cougars found their form and once again put together a stellar 20 minutes. Chatham put up 51 second half points, just one shy of the season high. The Cougars also frequently found their way to the free throw line, making the trip 16 times in the second half and converting three-fourths of their shots.
Chatham won despite shooting 40% from the field compared to just under 44% by the opposition. The Cougars also relied on just eight players while Grove City nearly doubled that amount with 15 players seeing minutes. The biggest difference was the discipline, with the Wolverines turning the ball over 23 times and committing 24 fouls. Chatham had 18 turnovers and the Cougars' fouls were exactly half of Grove City's.
The game's leading scorer was senior
Malik Potter, scoring 24 points on 8-17 from the field and 6-13 from three with two blocks. It was the seventh game this season Potter scored over 20. Junior
Marcos Cintron had 14 points with three assists while sophomore
Simon Boyer and first-year
Blaine Gartley had a baker's dozen. Gartley and senior
Nick Fiumara made five free throws, while senior
Nick Bomar pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in his second start of the season.
The Cougars and Wolverines will do it again in Mercer County when Chatham travels to Grove City for a 7:30 tip.
