WAYNESBURG, Pa. – February 5, 2022 – The Chatham men's basketball team found itself in unfamiliar territory, trailing Waynesburg at the halftime break. Despite that, the Cougars found a way to battle back and keep their first-placed aspirations afloat with a 61-49 win over the Yellow Jackets, improving Chatham to 16-1 overall and 11-1 in PAC play.
After Chatham took an early lead, the Jackets controlled the majority of the first half, building up a lead that was as high as 10 points. It was the second largest deficit overcome by the Cougars in a winning effort, but the Cougars still trailed at half 26-23 thanks to a stellar defensive outing. Chatham did not allow a Waynesburg point in the final 5:44 of action after trailing by double digits for just the third time this season.
The Cougars got out to a quick spurt in the second half, starting on a 13-2 run to give them the lead right back, a lead they would not renounce. The Yellow Jackets didn't go away too easily, but the strong second half performance carried over from the rest of the week, putting away Waynesburg for good. Chatham outscored the Yellow Jackets 38-23 in the second half.
Chatham shot just over 43% from the field for the game, including 50% in the second half. It also held Waynesburg to just three made triples, all in the first half, and Chatham held a 41-30 advantage in rebounds alongside six blocks.
There were four Cougars that reached double figures. Junior
Marcos Cintron led all players on the court with 16 points, 12 of them from beyond the arc. Three Chatham players had 10 points, including sophomore
Simon Boyer and seniors
Malik Potter and
Ben Pollock. Pollock finished with nine rebounds and three blocks, becoming the program's single-season leader in the latter category with 35. First-year
Blaine Gartley also had three assists and three steals.
Chatham returns to the Cougar Den on Monday for the first of two games in the week with Grove City, beginning at 7:00.
