Rye, N.Y. – February 4, 2022 – In what turned out to be a high scoring affair, the Chatham men's hockey team pulled through in the end with a 6-5 victory at Manhattanville. The Cougars' record improves to 6-9-2 overall and 5-5-2 in UCHC play.
After allowing an early goal, Chatham struck three times to go up 3-1 in the first. The first was an unassisted goal by sophomore
Carson Grainer. The second came 2:30 later when junior
Aidan Girduckis and senior
Tristan Simm fed the puck to junior
Kenneth Gill, giving the Cougars the first of two leads. The third was scored by junior
Andrew Warhoftig after getting an assist from Grainer.
Manhattanville went on to score the next two goals to make the score 3-3 early in the second. The scoring frenzy continued when first-year
Zack Conner scored on the power play after Warhoftig and classmate
Matthew Doyle assisted him. The Valiants struck quickly after making the score 4-4 after two.
Manhattanville tacked one on early in the third to take a 5-4 lead, but the offense was silent after that. Warhoftig got a pass from first-year
Evan Mitchell to tie the game at 5-5. Then the Valiants committed a penalty with under a minute to play, and Conner turned it into a game-winner with just under 20 seconds left in regulation after getting another assist from Mitchell.
Chatham won despite being outshot 29-25 and trailing in face-off wins 40-26, thanks in no small part to three power play goals. Senior
Ricardo Gonzalez made 24 saves in net.
The Cougars have a less than 24-hour turnaround when they head to Neumann University to take on the Knights in a rematch that ended in a 5-5 tie. Puck drops tomorrow at 4:00.
