PITTSBURGH, Pa. - February 16, 2022 - Women's Basketball hosted Washington & Jefferson this evening in the final home game of the regular season. The game was a back-and-forth battle throughout until the Presidents broke away late in the fourth for a 57-50 win.
The Presidents would claim a five-point lead early, but the Cougars were quick to tie it back up and then some, taking an eventual seven-point lead themselves. Chatham's offense was jumpstarted by graduate students Julianna Skowron and Maddy Grennes, followed by a pair of threes from junior Riley D'Angelo and first-year Emily Durkee. First-years Zelimar Rodriguez and Aurielle Brunner as well as senior Aliyah Labriola would take the Cougars up to 18 points before the quarter ran out.
In the second, W&J would make a run of the scoreboard, nearly tripling their point total. However, the Cougars stayed with them thanks to the offensive efforts of Labriola, Grennes, Durkee, and Skowron.
With a mere one-point deficit in favor of the visiting team, a battle of defense ensured. Chatham and W&J acquired just ten and eight points respectively. Chatham's baskets were provided by Brunner and Rodriguez, as well as junior Sierra McClain for three.
The fourth quarter was perhaps the most intense of the season, with both teams within a basket's reach of each other's point totals throughout the first several minutes. Crucial points were had by Skowron, Brunner, and McClain, but unfortunately that would be all the Cougars could manage as the Presidents poured on the final points.
The Cougars now stand at 10-7 in conference with one game left, to be played on Saturday, February 19th at Franciscan.
